Hashtag Research is one of the keys to success on Instagram in 2019 (and was before!) – so picking the right hashtags will give you the best results. And with results, we mean likes and exposure!
We know that it has become much more difficult to be seen on Instagram these days. But I grew my own Instagram account (@fernwehsarah) to 35,000 followers within just 18 months – and I constantly get around 1,500 – 3,000 likes on EACH picture. (Even with the recent algorithm changes!) It’s still possible if you know how to! And hashtags do play an important role in being successful on Instagram!

If you have a smart hashtag strategy, then you will always target hashtags that are “the right size” for your account. This will give you great engagement on Instagram and help you to constantly hit the Explore page!

Island-specific hashtags for New Zealand
As you (hopefully!) know, New Zealand consists of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. And not surprisingly, there are specific New Zealand hashtags for both North and South Island!

Regional New Zealand Hashtags
Depending on where you shot your Instagram pic, you can also use the hashtag of the region (New Zealand has 16 regions). Some regions are cities as well so I listed them under cities (e.g. Auckland and Wellington)
Most regions also have an Instagram account themselves. It’s a good idea to tag the region on your picture as they might re-share it when tagged!
Sometimes the regions have created their own official hashtag (e.g., #thisismanawatu by @manawatu_nz). These hashtags are sometimes really small but the region might share your picture when you use their own hashtag!

New Zealand has only a few bigger cities: Auckland, Wellington (the capital) and Christchurch. For most cities, the hashtag is pretty easy – it’s either the name of the city of something with an “nz” in the end.
