When I first started my Instagram Account @fernwehsarah in 2018 I initially thought that editing photos for Instagram would be totally overrated.
Boy, was I wrong…
And to be honest, I was also pretty frightened by learning how to edit photos for Instagram. I tried around a bit with Snapseed and VSCO in the beginning. The results were…let’s just say “showing some upward potential”.
But Lightroom still seemed super complicated to me – there were a million sliders and I didn’t know the function of most of them.
So I decided to purchase an online course on how to edit with Lightroom. It was a total waste of money (of 279$ to be precise…ouch!). All the information it contained would have been available on Youtube as well and it was not tailored towards “that Instagram look”.
So I decided to purchase some Lightroom Presets myself from another Instagram Travel Girl that I really admired. And that was a total game changer! Suddendly I started to understand which sliders move in which direction to actually get the look that I want.
After a while, I stopped using her presets gradually and slowly started using more and more of my own presets. I organized them into collections that made it easy for me to find a preset that fits virtually any light situation (like, e.g. really dark streets or pictures against the sunset). And that’s when people on Instagram started asking me “whose presets I actually use”.
I still didn’t really realize that I had created something that was actually helpful to others too.
My followers continued to grow at a time where most people already said it wouldn’t be possible anymore. And then the first brands started asking me if I would like to work with them. And then they started paying me for posting that content. And inviting me to fully sponsored press trips to exotic destinations.
Only by talking to my clients I realized that it’s actually less my follower count they cared about but the quality pictures they can get from me (I always share content rights with them and allow them to post my pictures to their accounts as well)
And then it dawned to me: If both my followers AND my clients love my editing style – then this is indeed something that I can share with others to help them with their Instagram journey as well! And since my presets were already organized in preset packs for various light situations, they wouldn’t even have to learn how to edit themselves.
