SarahI daily get messages on Instagram from people asking me how I edit my Instagram pictures (and which presets I am using – Answer: mine!). That’s awesome, because it tell me that you really like my editing style!
So, the basic answer is: I edit my Instagram pictures with Adobe Lightroom CC. I was first using the mobile app – but then quickly decided that the desktop version is worth 15$ a month and I am now editing almost everything on desktop.
But let’s get straight to the topic now: Lightroom Presets (and why you need a preset pack for a consistent feed look)

What's a Preset Pack?
A Lightroom preset pack is a collection of usually 10-30 individual Lightroom presets.
Each single of this preset is a preselection of the sliders in Lightroom. Some presets may not contain information for all sliders – but each of them gives a picture a distinctive look alone.
You can apply more than one preset on a picture, but very often, the second will override the settings from the first one (especially when working on mobile).
So most of the time, advanced Lightroom users just use one presets and adapt it if they are not yet satisfied with the results.
Why do I need a preset pack?
And this is where preset packs come into the game: if you are NOT an advanced Lightroom user, capable of doing those adaptions on your own.
Many people that are used to working with Adobe Lightroom sell those preset packs on their blogs, websites and on other platforms. Almost no one sells a single preset. And the reason for this is simple: you need more than one preset to bring consistency to your Instagram feed (and this is king when growing Instagram followers).
The original pictures can be dark or light, stained in different colors or be shot against the light. So naturally, how should one fixed setting make those different pictures look the same? It can’t.
The value of a good preset pack is, that it offers you a selection of presets that, together, offer consistency. This way, there will always be at least one preset in the pack that works well with your photo and gives you perfect results.

Can you see how different the settings on the first image are? Some of them are really dark, some of them are bright. Two are even against the light and one is stained in blue. This feed won’t give you many likes on Instagram…
On the second (pinkish) version, the pictures look much more similar and consistent!
Obviously, different presets were applied on the individual pictures – in this case my “Rose Dreams” preset pack for rose themed Instagram feeds which contains 15 individual presets that I tested on a large sample of different original photos in order to create “a good preset pack”

I hope this post helped you to understand WHY you need a preset pack and not only one preset if you want to make your Instagram feed look consistent (and you are not a pro at Lightroom already!). The only other option is to sit down and learn using Lightroom editing yourself.
