An exotic foodie adventure into Taipei

Taipei by night

One of the things I particularly love about Asia is night markets! They are vibrant, exotic and cheap – and full of local food (you know, I LOVE local food!)! However, I was a little bit hesitant to just eat anything on a night market in Taiwan, given the fact that my Chinese is limited to “Hello” and “Thank you”.

So we decided to look for a food tour and Markus came across a really cool website called Withlocals.com! Basically, here’s what they do: they match you with locals, that offer to show you around their city and give you a real insider view! They get commission for doing so – but I instantly liked the idea anyway!

After a quick research, we decided to go on the “Tasty Taiwanese Food Tour by Night” with Chris ! After a few short messages we scheduled to meet with Chris two days later at 7pm at Longshan temple and booked the experience.

And it was a perfect decision! We met at the metro station and then visited Longshan temple. The temple was amazing to see at night!

Chris explained a lot about Dao to us, the original Taiwanese religion and how the temple serves as a community center. Did you know that you can buy digital candles online at the temples website and “light” them as well? No need to go to the temple anymore for that! 😉

After visiting the temple we went on with the tour walking around a herb street, trying some traditional Taiwanese tea (tasty!) and went to two local restaurants nearby. In all of them, Chris ordered delicious dishes for us, factoring in our aversion for fish and seafood (NOT easy in Taiwan!).

Afterwards we went on to the night market and tried some juices and desserts there – you can’t believe how full I was in the end (and I am a good eater)! On top, I learned so much about Taiwan and what makes it so unique – it was like meeting a friend in a foreign city! Thanks a lot for this experience!

I will definitely use withlocals.com again because I love to go beyond the typical tourist paths and this is simply much easier with local guidance! And if you ever go to Taipei and want to try real Taiwanese Food – contact Chris! 🙂

And if Withlocals isn’t offering food tours in the city you are currently traveling to – there is often other operators that offer tours with real locals – like this guided food tour in New York!

Wondering where to stay in Taipei?

Don’t worry, I got you covered! 🙂 When we went to Taipei, we stayed at the beautiful Miramar Garden Hotel and I did both a Youtube vlog as well as a blog review about it!
