SarahI have been to Munich numerous time in the last year, mainly for business travel. Because of that, I slept at most of the 5* hotels in Munich already and feel like I can give you valid advice.
Last weekend Markus and I went to Munich because a friend of me celebrated her 30th birthday and we decided to add some all-touristy sightseeing to it. As I had not stayed at Steigenberger Munich before, I decided to give it a try. And how could I skip the chance to also write an honest, detailed hotel review about this 5* property? (You know me, NO WAY!)
So, here it is – my personal Steigenberger Munich review! I hope it helps you decide if this is the right property for you!)

The Location of STEIGENBERGER MUNICH
I have marked some of the most important sights as well as the hotel and the next public transportation stops in the map above to make it easy for you to orientate yourself.
Steigenberger Munich is located in Schwabing, a neighborhood north of the city center.
It is in a very safe area and the next underground station (U6) is 5min by foot. The U6 will bring you to Marienplatz in less than 10min. There is also a streetcar (23), but this is of lesser interest.
If you want to be in the center of city where many of the sights are located, Steigenberger is not the most central hotel choice (you might want to look at Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten then).
However, it is well connected to the city center and plus, it is very close to the autobahn and offers a quick connection to the airport (rare in Munich!) – so this might actually be a very good choice even though it is not central.
The Lobby / Hotel Grounds
What I really liked about the Steigenberger Munich was its clean and modern design. I am not a fan of big, old, baroque hotels with lots of gold – so this was exactly my type!
There is also a guest lounge that is accessible to all guest day and evening, where you can sit and relax or meet with other travelers.
The Room
The rooms at the Steigenberger Munich had the same light, airy and very modern design we already witnessed in the lobby and the hallway.
We stayed at a corner room, so possibly ours was larger than the standard room.
There is a minibar with free coffee and tea making facilities (Yaaaaay, free stuff!). I absolutely love having a coffee in bed in the morning before getting uo and doing anything – so this is always a huge plus for me.
As hotels (and buildings in general) are very rarely high in Munich, the view was nice but not spectacular.
The bathroom came with a modern rainforest shower and a separated toilet. (Pro tip: If you are desperately searching the bathrobes – they are hidden in the closet above the clothing rack!)
The In-Room Amenities
As mentioned already, there is a minibar with a Nespresso maschine and a kettle as well as some free teas, Nespresso capsules, sugar and condensed milk. All the other items in the minibar are not free (as usual).
In the bathroom you will find shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and shower gel. They smelled really well but I haven’t tried them as I always use my own silicone-free shampoo and conditioner. There is also the usual Q-tips and make-up removal pads.
In the closet we found (after searching…) the expected two bathrobes with slippers as well as the other stuff that is mandatory for 5* properties in Germany (like a sewing kit and shoe cleaning equipement). There was no ironing board but we got it delivered in less than 10min after calling the reception and asking for one.
The Food (Breakfast Buffet)
As a total foodie, the breakfast buffet always is the highlight of every hotel stay for me (okay, as long as there is no rooftop infinity pool…!). And Steigenberger Munich did not disappoint with the selection!
There is numerous kinds of egg dishes (including an omelette station), bread, cheese, veggies, fruits and the likes. On top, there is free sparkeling wine (plus points!!!) and freshly squeezed juices.
Having been drinking a bit in the evening, I was delighted to find some heavy, bavarian traditional items as well: white sausages, Obatzer (a kind of cheesy bread spread) and pretzels! Exactly what I needed!
And for my japanese friends: Steigenberger Munich does also have Miso soup at the buffet!
The Spa and Fitness studio
The Spa at Steigenberger Munich is definitely one of the best arguments to stay here!
While there is no swimming pool, there is a really nice spa area with two huge saunas and a steam room. There is also shaved ice to cool down and a station with fresh water to refill after sweating. On top, you can find a quiet relaxation room and two foot baths here. This is definitely much more than most 5* hotels offer and it is brand new, beautifully designed and immaculately clean. The only thing I would have wished for on top would be a Jacuzzi (or said swimming pool)
The fitness studio was rather small and had two treadmills, two crosstrainers and one bike as well as some weights. Did only give it a brief look as I was desperate to head to the beautiful spa 😀
The Bar
There is a stylish bar located at ground level near the lobby.
They have a nice selection of (rather expensive) beverages – especially if you want to try some bavarian beer you will have quite a lot of choices!
As the bar is non-smoking, there is a small galls room where you can smoke cigars if this is something you like (I don’t smoke, so I didn’t try)
The Staff
Everyone at Steigenberger was extremely friendly and accommodating as I would expect it from a hotel of that standard.
The only thing we did not like was that the room maid knocked twice at 8:50 on sunday morning and woke us up (nooooo!). While the first time was our fault as we did not hang the “do not disturb” out, it should not have happened a second time only like 10min later. Anyway, it was a minor thing and other than that I can not complain about a single thing!
Wrap up - My personal verdict on Steigenberger Munich
So let’s get to the bottom line of my Steigenberger Munich review – should you stay there?
In my opinion, Steigenberger Munich is a very good choice if you are looking for a 5* luxury hotel in Munich! In my opinion it is the most modern and well designed hotel I stayed at in Munich.
The only thing where Steigenberger might fall short is the location. As mentioned, you get to Marienplatz super quick with the U6. And for anyone coming with the car or from the airport, you will love how close it is to the autobahn. But if you want to be in the city center directly, it is not your perfect choice. Then probably Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten is the best 5* hotel. And if you are coming late evening by train (or leaving very early), Sofitel Munich Bayerpost or Le Meridien Munich are your best choices.
But for everyone who wants to see numerous sights (like Olympia stadium or Nymphenburg, Dachau or Neuschwanstein) – don’t focus on being in the city center too much! Connection matters and this is good from Steigenberger Munich!
Some additional remarks about Munich
Munich is an impressive city and you will definitely need more than one day to explore everything. I would suggest you plan at least 3 days for it (5 if you also want to go to Schloss Neuschwanstein and Dachau Concentration Camp)
If you are visiting Germany for the first time, please do not only go to Munich! Plan some time to see other cities as well (Berlin!!!).
