After having spent the first week in Bali buzzing around Ubud, Sanur and Nusa Penida, Markus and I decided to venture further north in Bali and go to Munduk. Munduk is one of these last hidden gems in Bali that is not on everybody’s mind already and thus offers a much more authentic Balinese experience. Or at least, that’s what we were told – we’ll get to this question later!
When we came across Munduk Moding Plantation we instantly recognized their infinity pool from Instagram – and we are sure you have seen it too already. Actually, we think this is THE most instagrammable infinity pool in all of Bali!
So, the decision was quickly taken and we decided to stay for three nights at Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa! And as always, we will try to answer all questions you might have in this review of Munduk Moding Plantation!

The location of Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa
Munduk Moding Plantation (or: Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa if spelling the full name) is a luxury eco-boutique resort in Munduk, Bali.
Munduk is one of Bali’s last hidden gems and lies 55 kilometers north of Ubud. Thus, you will need around two hours from Denpasar Airport to get to Munduk Moding Plantation.
However, this rather remote location is perfect for visiting all these famous waterfalls you saw on Instagram – they are actually all in or pretty close to Munduk!
Furthermore, Munduk Moding Plantation (as the name already suggests) is situated at a real coffee plantation and offers stunning views over the nature of Bali.
About Munduk Moding Plantation and their concept and philosophy
Munduk Moding Plantation was named the best Eco-Luxury Resort in Indonesia by the World Luxury Hotels association in 2016 – and once you visit, you will not be surprised by that!
Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa was founded by a family traveling to Bali that fell in love with the nature of Munduk. They then looked for an abandoned coffee plantation and transformed it into this stunning eco-luxury resort with the help of a famous Balinese architect.
Sustainability Measures
Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa is 100% run by Balinese employees and they go great lengths to ensure that the resort is run as eco-friendly as possible. Wastewater is cleaned, organic waste composted and plastic waste reduced as much as possible.
Furthermore, Munduk Moding Plantation is one of the few really eco-friendly coffee plantations in Bali and they support local farmers.
When learning about their efforts we felt like we really needed to highlight this in our review of Munduk Moding Plantation as we both profoundly believe that this is the future of sustainable luxury travel!

Check-in at Munduk Moding Plantation
When we arrived at Munduk Moding Plantation it was raining cats and dogs! We were really lucky with the weather before because we actually came during the rainy season.
The staff made sure we arrive in the lobby as dry as possible and we were instantly offered some hot ginger tea (delicious!) and hot towels. After a quick look around the main areas, we were transported to our villa (Villa 5) which was luckily super close to reception.

Munduk Moding Plantation offers a range of accommodation, spanning from “normal” rooms (called “Garden Suite”) in the main building to a huge five-bedroom villa with a private pool plus (!) jacuzzi. They also have one-bedroom villas with private pool and jacuzzi if you are looking for a honeymoon getaway!
As mentioned, we stayed at a one-bedroom villa with a beautiful view of the valley. (Or at least, whenever it was not raining!)
We really liked that the villa is surrounded by lots of greenery and tropical plants. They offer protection from outside views, so your villa offers complete privacy – without any visible walls!
The bed is really huge and comes with a beautiful canopy that is prepared during turndown service in the late afternoon.
You also have a big and comfortable sofa that is just perfect for sipping a coffee while looking over the valley. We found it particularly cozy while it was raining!
To the left and the right of the giant bed, you will get into your bathroom, which comes with an indoor shower, an outdoor rainforest shower, AND a big bathtub!
We did use all the showers and took a bath as well. The only minor detail that we noticed here was that the hot water is a bit limited, so your bathtub might need a few more minutes to fill up (but it will be hot in the end, no worries).
Also, the outdoor showers had a few spider webs. I am arachnophobic, so I am VERY good at spotting even the tiniest net and it was not a problem for me. Except for that, everything was meticulously clean and there were no insects anywhere. A big plus in the tropics!

Amenities at Munduk Moding Plantation
As Munduk Moding is famous for its coffee we were delighted to find some of their own organic coffee in our room, along with tea and creamer + sugar.
In the bathroom, you will find the usual suspects: Conditioner, Shampoo, Body Wash and Soap. On top, they also had some bath salts and Bath Foam which smelled really good.
While I really liked that they didn’t use any plastic packages, I would have loved to know the ingredients of the products as I never use hair products with silicone. Probably, they were without silicone, but I can’t tell you for sure.
Facilities at Munduk Moding Plantation
Well, the main thing that everyone will tell you about directly is the stunning infinity pool. And it was nominated for one of Asia’s most impressive infinity pools for a pretty good reason!
And there is even more than “only” a gorgeous infinity pool!
THE Munduk Moding Plantation Infinity Pools
But let’s start with the infinity pools first. Yes, you heard that right – there are actually TWO infinity pools at Munduk Moding Plantation that look pretty similar!
And the reason behind is really smart: The pool rules allow you to take shots at the lower pool in the morning and at the higher one in the evening! This way, there is always one pool that people can swim in without being “disturbed by pictures” (or, photos being destroyed by swimmers! :D)
It is actually pretty easy to walk on the edge of the pool and it is not forbidden. And while it might look dangerous, it is not – there is no void here – just a garden some 1.5 meters below the edge of the pool 🙂
The Jacuzzi
Spoiler Alert – you will LOVE this little jacuzzi also in the heat of Bali! Why? Well, Munduk Moding Plantation is 1,200 meters above sea level and thus, it is actually not that hot at night.
So you might really love to watch the sunset from the jacuzzi (after taking a shot at the infinity pool!)
Spa at Munduk Moding Plantation
Munduk Moding Plantation offers a state-of-the-art spa where you can pamper yourself from something as small as a shoulder and back massage to large packages involving massages, body scrubs, and flower baths.
Unfortunately, we did not have the time to visit the spa – but the price list was very reasonable and we would love to explore this facility during another visit!
Library and Pool Table
At the main building, above the restaurant, there is also a little library as well as a room where you can play table soccer and pool! Especially for really rainy days, this can be an interesting option!
Activities offered by Munduk Moding Plantation
If you think that there is not a lot to do at Munduk since this place is lesser-known, you couldn’t be more wrong! In fact, we think that you can easily spend an entire holiday in Munduk – or better, at Munduk Moding Plantation!
The MMP Experience Program
Munduk Moding Plantation has a program that they call “the MMP Experience” – and this one is one of the things that really sets them apart from their competition in Bali (aside from their Eco mindset and their infinity pool!).
Shortly speaking, the “MMP Experience Program” is a set of activities that are already included in your room price and that you can participate in free of charge!
Daily activities
- Guided morning trek through the coffee plantation
- Shuttle service to popular locations around Munduk (Ulun Dalu Temple, Botanical Gardens, local market, Munduk waterfall)
- Afternoon Tea by the poolside
- Bonfires at night
Program (certain days of the week)
- Workshop about how to make local Balinese offerings from flowers
- Yoga Class
- Traditional coffee processing and tasting demonstration (+harvesting in July/August)
- Balinese kite making (and flying) class
- Workshop about Balinese attire and how to wear it (+try them on!)

- Bamboo Gamelan Lessons
- Visits to local Hindu ceremonies
As you can see, your possibilities are really varied – and a menu in your room will tell you every day what you can do that day!
Coffee plantation tour
We participated in the coffee plantation tour on our first morning and we can recommend this free activity to you! At breakfast time you register for the tour which will start at the lobby at 10:30 and will take 1-1.5 hours.
During the tour, you will not only see coffee plants and get an explanation about coffee processing but also learn a lot about all the other plants that grow on Munduk Moding Plantation. As they have their own herbal garden and grow their own food organically, there’s a lot to see (and smell!)
And at the end of the tour, you will get to sample some of the coffee that is produced at Munduk Moding Plantation as well – including the world-famous “Kopi Luwak”! (To be completely honest, we didn’t taste such a difference!)
Food at Munduk Moding Plantation
The food at Munduk Moding Plantation is served at their restaurant called “MiMPi” – and it has stunning views over the coffee plantation! They do serve traditional Indonesian cuisine made from local, fresh ingredients.

Breakfast at Munduk Moding Plantation is included in your room price and is served at MiMPi restaurant. There is a buffet that includes Indonesian as well as Continental/European options! Eggs are made to order and we really found them to be excellent!
If you want to know everything exactly before arriving, their breakfast menu is online too!
Coffee and afternoon tea (high tea)
Well, you are staying at an active, organic coffee plantation – so no wonder, coffee is a big topic here!
You can choose between a variety of coffee specialties – including the famous “kopi luwak” (You know, the one that the Asian palm civet has eaten before!).
And if you ever wanted to try this coffee, Munduk Moding Plantation is a great place to do so because they produce it organically from collecting the feces of wild-living animals (sadly, some other coffee plantations cage civets nowadays in order to produce Kopi Luwak…).
Along with your tea or coffee, you get two DELICIOUS cookies too. And you can enjoy the view over the valley (and people posing on the upper infinity pool now!). And if you ask nicely, you might even get a few additional cookies! 🙂
Romantic dinner at Munduk Moding Plantation
We ate at MiMPi each day during our stay because we liked the restaurant so much!
MiMPi offers a mix of International as well as Indonesian and Balinese dishes at very reasonable prices (6-8$ per main). And the quality is actually really good!
On the first evening, we were told by our waiter that the dishes are very small and couples usually order three to four dishes. So we decided on a third main and the food was way too much! I am certainly a really good eater and we weren’t able to finish all the dishes.
Especially since you will always get a free amuse-bouche AND some fried chips with dips before your food arrives.
So our recommendation would be to simply stick with one main – and MAYBE order a starter if you are really hungry! 🙂
But now on to something really awesome about dinner at Munduk Moding Plantation! If you are quick enough, you can reserve one of two gazebos for a romantic outdoor seating at no extra cost!
There are two seating times (6:30 pm to 9 pm and 9 pm to 11:30 pm) – given that the sun goes down at around 6 pm we think the first seating is perfect!
Our final verdict on Munduk and Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa
By that time, you might have guessed it already: we absolutely loved staying at Munduk Moding Plantation! It was really hard for us to leave after three days because there were still a million things we wanted to do in Munduk and surroundings.
Thus, we would recommend you to stay at least a week – trust us, it will not get boring. Munduk Moding Plantation offers so many complimentary tours and activities that this is simply the perfect place to explore the island.
And you will love the sunsets at the pool. And the breakfasts. And the mornings and afternoon. You know, like every minute you spend there. 🙂
